Why Raw

What does raw feeding do for your dog?

Research does not prove that raw diets are broadly healthier than every balanced commercial diet. Small controlled studies have found differences in digestibility, stool output and gut microbiota. Results depend on the recipe, handling and the individual dog. Read our NZ raw-feeding guide.

Better Digestion

In small controlled feeding studies, the tested raw diets produced less faecal output and higher protein digestibility than the tested extruded diets. Those results apply to the diets studied, not every raw product. Read the study.

Skin & Coat: What We Know

Some owners report coat changes after switching food, but controlled research has not established that raw diets generally improve skin or coat health. Diet-related skin problems need veterinary assessment, especially where allergies are suspected. Read our food-sensitivity guide.

Gut Microbiome Changes

Controlled studies show that changing between raw and extruded diets changes the faecal microbiome and fermentation products. A different microbiome is not automatically a healthier one, and longer-term clinical research is still needed. Read the study.

Cleaner Teeth Naturally

One small study of eight Beagles found that chewing raw bovine bones reduced existing dental calculus over 12 to 20 days. This does not make every bone safe. Tooth fractures, choking and digestive obstruction remain possible, so choose an appropriate bone and supervise your dog. Read the study.

What Research Does Not Prove

Current studies do not establish that raw diets improve immunity, allergies or overall clinical health. Raw food also requires hygienic handling and a nutritionally complete formulation. Speak with your vet before changing the diet of a puppy, senior dog or dog with a medical condition. Review the clinical evidence.

Why Kuri

Why choose Kuri raw dog food?

Made in New Zealand, delivered fresh, and formulated to remove the guesswork from raw feeding. Here is why Christchurch owners switch.

Consistent recipes, simple portions

Kuri uses consistent recipes and pre-portioned medallions, so you do not need to prepare separate meat, organ and tripe portions at every meal. Follow the product feeding information and ask our team or your vet if your dog has growth, weight or medical requirements.

Pre-portioned and ready to feed

Our food comes in convenient frozen medallions that separate easily. Feed thawed or frozen as a cold treat on a warm Canterbury afternoon. Take from the freezer the night before, ready in the morning. No meal prep required.

Made in Aotearoa New Zealand

Kuri raw food is made in New Zealand using local ingredients, supporting NZ farmers and producers. When you order, you're getting food made here rather than warehoused imports. Fresher ingredients, shorter chain.

Trusted by our own daycare dogs

Kuri works with dogs across daycare, grooming, walking and small-group training. You get feeding support from a team that knows dogs beyond the food bowl. We help with portions, transitions, weight checks and choosing a practical starting protein.

Six Proteins

Which protein should you start with?

Lamb and chicken are the easiest starting points for most dogs, but the right protein depends on your dog's history and any known sensitivities.

Protein Best for
Chicken Dogs with no known sensitivities; the most familiar protein for transitioning from kibble
Beef Good general protein; suits active or working dogs well
Lamb Widely digestible; a solid first protein for dogs new to raw
Venison NZ grass-fed, low fat, high in iron; popular for lean and active small breeds
Rabbit Novel protein; useful for dogs with chicken or beef sensitivities
Salmon High in omega-3s; good for coat condition and joint support

Ingredients

What's in Kuri raw dog food?

Kuri recipes use clearly listed meat, organ, tripe and bone ingredients. Check each product page for its specific recipe and feeding information.

New Zealand pasture where Kuri raw dog food ingredients are sourced

Raw Meat

Chicken, beef, lamb, venison, rabbit, or salmon. Your choice of protein, sourced in New Zealand from local farmers and producers.

Organ Meat

Heart, liver and kidney supply concentrated nutrients. Follow the product feeding information, because organ intake and the total diet still need to suit your dog.

Green Tripe

Unbleached ruminant stomach included in several Kuri recipes. Many dogs find it highly palatable. Research does not yet establish broad digestive-health benefits from green tripe alone.

Raw Bones

Ground bone is included in several recipes. Follow the product feeding information and ask your vet about calcium and phosphorus requirements for puppies or dogs with medical conditions.

Kuri raw food is made in Aotearoa New Zealand using local ingredients. It is sold frozen and is not heat processed. This describes the product format and does not prove that raw food is healthier for every dog.

"I can’t recommend KURI enough! Excellent product to start with! The raw is fantastic, and works out to be value for money and not as expensive as I first thought- see their food calculator, they’ve done all the work for you. The medallions make it easy- organ meat, bones, tripe in one easy medallion. The green tripe is fantastic- a hard one to find that is green and not bleached like human tripe grade. "

Pip Everly ★★★★★

"Kuri is truly amazing to our wee Olly when it comes to having a home away from home. Friendliest staff, fantastic selection of raw food and would recommend Kuri to anyone."

FAQ

Raw dog food questions, answered.

Straight answers for Christchurch owners switching to raw food.

What is a raw dog food diet?

A raw diet contains uncooked animal ingredients such as meat, organs and bone, sometimes with plant ingredients. Recipes vary widely. The important question is whether the complete diet supplies the nutrients your dog needs and is handled safely.

Kuri's recipes are pre-portioned for convenient feeding. Follow the product feeding information and use our NZ raw-feeding guide when planning the wider diet.

Is raw dog food safe for puppies?

Puppies have strict requirements for energy, calcium, phosphorus and other nutrients. Use a complete diet formulated for growth and check the feeding plan with your vet rather than relying on meat alone.

Use the Recommendation Tool above or call the team for portion guidance: (03) 355 5874. Puppy raw guide.

Is raw better than kibble?

Raw food can offer practical benefits over kibble. Controlled feeding studies have found that raw diets can provide high protein digestibility and produce smaller, firmer stools compared with the extruded diets tested. Many owners also choose raw because it provides clearly identifiable ingredients, flexible protein choices and greater control over what they feed their dog.

Compare the practical costs and trade-offs in our raw versus kibble guide.

Can raw food help dogs with allergies?

A vet-supervised elimination diet can help identify food triggers. A single-protein product may be useful within that plan, but being raw does not itself treat an allergy.

Speak to your vet before switching if your dog has a confirmed diagnosis. More on allergies.

Can I mix raw dog food with kibble?

Many dogs tolerate raw and kibble in the same feeding plan. There is no good evidence that different digestion rates make the combination inherently unsafe. Introduce dietary changes gradually and monitor your dog.

Use our raw and kibble guide for a practical transition approach.

How do I transition my dog to raw food?

Start with a single protein and introduce it gradually over seven to ten days. Begin at around 25% raw alongside their current food, then increase the raw proportion every two to three days.

A brief stool change can occur after a diet change, but persistent diarrhoea, vomiting or lethargy needs veterinary advice. Use our transition guide and the Recommendation Tool above.

Are raw meaty bones safe for dogs?

Raw bones are not risk-free. A small study found reduced dental calculus in Beagles chewing raw bovine bones, but bones can still cause tooth fractures, choking or obstruction. Never feed cooked bones.

Always choose a bone larger than your dog's mouth to prevent swallowing whole. Kuri recipes also include ground raw bone at pre-calculated ratios. Bones guide.

Is raw food suitable for senior dogs?

Some senior dogs eat raw diets successfully, but age alone does not make raw food preferable. The right choice depends on dental health, digestion, body condition and medical history.

For dogs managing conditions such as kidney disease, check with your vet before switching, as protein levels may need adjusting. Senior dog guide.
