Why Raw

What does raw feeding do for your dog?

Raw feeding gives dogs food their digestive systems are designed to process. Most owners notice visible changes within two to four weeks of switching from kibble.

Better Digestion

Dogs on raw food typically show firmer, smaller stools within the first week or two. Unprocessed food requires less digestive effort, and more of what your dog eats is actually absorbed.

Healthier Skin & Coat

The natural oils in proteins like salmon, combined with the absence of grain fillers, make a real difference to coat condition. Particularly visible in Cavoodles, Maltese, and Bichon Frises prone to sensitive or dry skin.

Steadier Energy

Without the glucose spikes that come from grain-heavy kibble, dogs on raw tend to show more consistent energy throughout the day. Active without being hyperactive.

Cleaner Teeth Naturally

Chewing raw meat and appropriately-sized raw bones works the jaw and scrapes plaque naturally. One of the most effective dental hygiene mechanisms available to dogs. Raw bones only: cooked bones become brittle and should never be fed.

Immune System Support

Whole-food ingredients in their natural form give the immune system more to work with. Dogs with food sensitivities often improve when moved to a single-protein raw diet with a novel protein, removing common dietary triggers. Speak to your vet before switching if your dog has a confirmed diagnosis.

Why Kuri

Why choose Kuri raw dog food?

Made in New Zealand, delivered fresh, and formulated to remove the guesswork from raw feeding. Here is why Christchurch owners switch.

Formulated, not improvised

Most raw feeding approaches require sourcing muscle meat, organs, and bones separately and calculating ratios yourself. Kuri does that for you. Every recipe is formulated: muscle meat, organ meat, green tripe, and bone content are calibrated so you feed one product, not a combination of parts.

Pre-portioned and ready to feed

Our food comes in convenient frozen medallions that separate easily. Feed thawed or frozen as a cold treat on a warm Canterbury afternoon. Take from the freezer the night before, ready in the morning. No meal prep required.

Made in Aotearoa New Zealand

Kuri raw food is made in New Zealand using local ingredients, supporting NZ farmers and producers. When you order, you're getting food made here rather than warehoused imports. Fresher ingredients, shorter chain.

Trusted by our own daycare dogs

Kuri runs Christchurch's only small-dog daycare. Over 40% of our daycare and grooming customers also feed their dogs Kuri raw food. Our team recommends it because we see the results every day: coat condition, energy levels, digestive health. An honest recommendation, not a product push.

Six Proteins

Which protein should you start with?

Lamb and chicken are the easiest starting points for most dogs, but the right protein depends on your dog's history and any known sensitivities.

Protein Best for
Chicken Dogs with no known sensitivities; the most familiar protein for transitioning from kibble
Beef Good general protein; suits active or working dogs well
Lamb Widely digestible; a solid first protein for dogs new to raw
Venison NZ grass-fed, low fat, high in iron; popular for lean and active small breeds
Rabbit Novel protein; useful for dogs with chicken or beef sensitivities
Salmon High in omega-3s; good for coat condition and joint support

Ingredients

What's in Kuri raw dog food?

Every Kuri recipe is built from the same core components, combined in formulated ratios with no synthetic additives.

New Zealand pasture where Kuri raw dog food ingredients are sourced

Raw Meat

Chicken, beef, lamb, venison, rabbit, or salmon. Your choice of protein, sourced in New Zealand from local farmers and producers.

Organ Meat

Heart, liver, and kidney. The vitamin and mineral-dense parts of the animal that dogs naturally seek out. Pre-calculated so you never over-dose.

Green Tripe

A nutrient-dense part of the ruminant stomach, blended into most recipes. Dogs find it highly palatable, and it supports healthy gut flora and digestion.

Raw Bones

Ground into the recipe at appropriate ratios for calcium and phosphorus balance. Never cooked: cooking makes bones brittle and unsafe for dogs.

All Kuri raw food is made in Aotearoa New Zealand using local ingredients. No imported fillers, no synthetic additives, no heat processing that destroys natural vitamins and enzymes.

"I can’t recommend KURI enough! Excellent product to start with! The raw is fantastic, and works out to be value for money and not as expensive as I first thought- see their food calculator, they’ve done all the work for you. The medallions make it easy- organ meat, bones, tripe in one easy medallion. The green tripe is fantastic- a hard one to find that is green and not bleached like human tripe grade. "

Pip Everly ★★★★★

"Kuri is truly amazing to our wee Olly when it comes to having a home away from home. Friendliest staff, fantastic selection of raw food and would recommend Kuri to anyone."

FAQ

Raw dog food questions, answered.

Straight answers for Christchurch owners switching to raw food.

What is a raw dog food diet?

A raw diet feeds your dog unprocessed ingredients designed to match what their digestive system handles best: meat, organs, bones, and some plant matter. Unlike kibble, which is cooked at high temperatures and bound with starches, raw food is not heat-processed.

Kuri's recipes are pre-portioned and formulated to nutritional ratios so no preparation is needed on your part. Full guide.

Is raw dog food safe for puppies?

Yes, from around weaning age. Puppies can start on raw food from four to six weeks. Use a single protein in appropriate portion sizes for their current weight and growth stage.

Use the Recommendation Tool above or call the team for portion guidance: (03) 355 5874. Puppy raw guide.

Is raw better than kibble?

Raw food offers better nutrient availability than heat-processed kibble. High-temperature manufacturing degrades much of the natural vitamin and enzyme content in ingredients, which manufacturers then replace with synthetic additives.

The practical difference most owners report: better coat, firmer stools, steadier energy, and cleaner teeth. Raw vs kibble.

Can raw food help dogs with allergies?

Many owners whose dogs have food sensitivities see improvement after switching to a single-protein raw diet, particularly with a novel protein the dog has not eaten before, such as rabbit or venison. This removes common dietary triggers.

Speak to your vet before switching if your dog has a confirmed diagnosis. More on allergies.

Can I mix raw dog food with kibble?

Not in the same meal. Raw and kibble digest at different rates: raw passes through quickly while kibble digests slowly. Mixing them in one bowl can cause digestive discomfort.

If transitioning, alternate meals rather than combining: raw in the morning, kibble at night, reducing the kibble portion over seven to ten days. Mixing guide.

How do I transition my dog to raw food?

Start with a single protein and introduce it gradually over seven to ten days. Begin at around 25% raw alongside their current food, then increase the raw proportion every two to three days.

Loose stools for the first few days are normal as the gut adjusts. The Recommendation Tool above includes a full 10-day transition plan. Transition guide.

Are raw meaty bones safe for dogs?

Raw bones are safe and beneficial. Cooked bones are not: cooking makes them brittle and prone to splintering. Raw bones support dental health and provide a natural calcium source.

Always choose a bone larger than your dog's mouth to prevent swallowing whole. Kuri recipes also include ground raw bone at pre-calculated ratios. Bones guide.

Is raw food suitable for senior dogs?

Yes. Senior dogs often struggle to extract nutrients from heavily processed food. Raw food's better nutrient availability means more of what they eat is actually used by the body.

For dogs managing conditions such as kidney disease, check with your vet before switching, as protein levels may need adjusting. Senior dog guide.
