Full Groom
in Christchurch

Your dog goes in needing a groom. They come out clean, clipped, nails done, ears clean, smelling good. That is the job, and at Kuri City we take it seriously.

Shannon has been grooming dogs for over 26 years. She works across all breeds and coat types, asks what you want before she starts, checks the coat and skin as she works, and tells you if she finds anything worth a vet’s attention. Kuri City is also a daycare, training, and raw dog food business. The people here see dogs every day in every context. That changes how you look at a dog on a grooming table.

Is a full groom right for my dog's breed?

A full groom is what you need if your dog’s coat grows continuously and needs to be clipped or scissored to length. This includes breeds like:

  • Maltese, Shih Tzu, Lhasa Apso, Bichon Frise
  • Poodles and all poodle crosses (Labradoodles, Cavoodles, Spoodles, Groodles)
  • Schnauzers
  • Cocker Spaniels
  • Yorkshire Terriers
  • Border Collies, Bearded Collies
  • Springer Spaniels, Lagotto
  • Newfoundlands, Leonburgers

If your dog has a short, smooth coat that does not need clipping (a Labrador, Staffy, Boxer, or similar), a bath and tidy is the better fit.

Shannon, your dog's groomer

Shannon has been grooming dogs professionally for over 26 years. She works with all breeds and all coat types, from a Maltese with a full show coat to a large double-coated breed that has never seen a grooming table. She has handled just about every temperament too, including dogs that have had difficult experiences elsewhere and arrive already anxious.

Before she starts she will talk through what you want, check the coat condition, and let you know if there are any surprises. She will tell you honestly if she finds anything on the skin or coat that needs a vet’s attention.

Because Kuri works with dogs every day across grooming, daycare, and raw feeding, we notice things other groomers do not. Diet is one of the things we notice. Dogs on a high-quality diet, particularly raw-fed dogs, tend to come in with better coat texture, less skin irritation, and less matting. It is visible. If your dog’s coat has been a recurring problem, it is worth asking whether food is part of the answer.

We’re located at 473 St Asaph Street, Phillipstown, Christchurch, with easy on-site parking right outside the door.

A note on puppies and winter gaps

Cute puppy resting on pillow.

The first mistake we see regularly: waiting too long to bring a puppy in for its first groom. Owners often think they should wait until the coat is long enough to do something with. The opposite is true. Puppies need to get used to being handled, the bath, the blow-dryer, the clippers, before they form strong reactions to any of it. A puppy that comes in at 12 to 16 weeks for a trial groom will be a much easier dog to groom at six months. A puppy that comes in for the first time at one year, with a full coat that has never been worked, is a harder experience for everyone.

The second is skipping grooming over winter. The coat does not stop growing because it is cold. Dogs that go three or four months without a groom through winter come back in spring with coats that are heavily matted, which means a longer appointment, more discomfort for the dog, and a higher cost. A groom every 6 to 8 weeks year-round is easier on your dog and more predictable on your wallet than catching up in spring.

Booking and what to know before you arrive

Grooming spaces are limited. New clients should book at least a week ahead. Call 03 355 5874 or use the contact form.

A few practical things:

  • If you need to cancel, please give us at least 24 hours notice. Cancellations inside 24 hours are charged at 50% of the groom cost, as the space is hard to fill at short notice.
  • We will give you an estimated pick-up time when you drop off. Dogs collected more than 20 minutes late are charged $10 per additional 20 minutes.
  • If your dog has significant matting we will let you know before we start, and any extra charge will be agreed upfront.

Frequently Asked Questions

Dog Grooming Christchurch - Everything you need to know about a full dog groom at Kuri City

What is the difference between a full groom and a bath and tidy?
A full groom includes a complete clip or scissor cut of the entire body as well as a bath, blow-dry, nails, ears, and sanitary trim. A bath and tidy includes the bath and blow-dry with a tidy of the face, feet, and sanitary area, but no body clip. If your dog's coat needs length taken off all over, that is a full groom.
How often does my dog need a full groom?
Most dogs with growing coats need a full groom every 6 to 8 weeks. Leaving it longer than 10 weeks often means the coat becomes matted, which costs more to fix and is uncomfortable for your dog. Regular grooming keeps coats healthy and the cost predictable.
Can you groom my nervous or reactive dog?
Yes. Our groomers work with anxious dogs regularly. One of our Google reviewers wrote that we "worked with our dog through some nervousness about grooms, showing so much patience and kindness." We work at your dog's pace. If your dog has specific needs, call us before booking so we can talk it through: 03 355 5874.
Do I need to book in advance?
Yes. Grooming spaces at Kuri City are limited. We recommend booking at least a week ahead. Call 03 355 5874 or use the contact form to book.
What products do you use?
We use professional, dog-safe shampoos and conditioners chosen for your dog's coat and skin. We do not use harsh or strongly perfumed products.
Is a full groom available for all breeds?
Yes. Shannon grooms all breeds and all coat types. If you have a specific breed or coat situation you want to talk through first, call us on 03 355 5874.
How should I prepare my dog for a groom?
A short walk before the appointment helps your dog arrive a little more relaxed. Make sure your dog has had a toilet stop, as anxious dogs sometimes need to go mid-groom. Do not feed a large meal right before. Other than that, nothing special is needed. Shannon will take it from there.

“Got my pup his first groom and Kuri did such an amazing job! I wasn’t expecting them to get much as I thought he would be difficult seeing as it’s first time, but they exceeded expectations and made him look so good plus got the matted parts too.
